For each cycle participants receive two solid discs approximately 35mm in diameter and 8 mm thick. The samples, which are made of similar alloys or different heats of the same alloy, are homogeneity tested.
 
Wet or instrument analysis may be performed for all elements. A different method may be used for each element. While CTS does not specify a particular method, some examples of methods that could be used include: ASTM E322, ASTM E415, ASTM E1019, and ASTM E1085.  
 
Laboratories may report the percentages of up to 10 specified elements per sample. Basic elements to be determined by laboratories include: Carbon (C), Manganese (Mn), Phosphorus (P), Sulfur (S), Silicon (Si), Copper (Cu), Nickel (Ni), Chromium (Cr), Molybdenum (Mo), and Aluminum (Al). CTS may include other elements depending on the alloy(s) distributed.
