Laboratories may report for Total Case Depth and/or Effective Case Depth. Laboratories that report data for the Total Case Depth Analysis should use either the optical method or the chemical method defined in SAE J423 while those that report data for the Effective Case Depth Analysis should use the mechanical method defined in J423.
