Two solid discs, made from either different alloys or two different heats of the same alloy and approximately 35mm in diameter and 8mm thick, are distributed for each test. The samples provided are homogeneity tested.
 
Wet or instrument analysis may be performed for all elements. A different method may be used for each element. While CTS does not specify a particular method, some examples of methods that could be used include: ASTM E1019, ASTM E1086, and ASTM E572.  
 
Laboratories may report the percentages of up to 10 specified elements per sample. Basic elements to be determined by laboratories include: Carbon (C), Manganese (Mn), Phosphorus (P), Cobalt (Co), Silicon (Si), Copper (Cu), Nickel (Ni), Chromium (Cr), and Molybdenum (Mo).
 
Other elements such as Nitrogen (N), Vanadium (V), Titanium (Ti), and Niobium (Nb) vary from cycle to cycle depending on the alloy(s) used.
