During each cycle participants receive two sets of three round steel samples with a 1 inch diameter and 3 inch length, for a total of six samples. Samples are typically made from AISI 4340 steel. ASTM E23 and ISO 148 are referenced.
Machining capability to prepare the specimens for testing is required. (Refer to standard for specimen diagram.)
Samples are tested at -30°C and the absorbed energy is reported.
CTS will rotate through specimens with a variety of energy levels year-over-year.
